Whether it's your first visit or
your first in a while,
we will always be happy
to have you visit.
The H has a vast backyard surrounded
by forest.

Lie on the grass and watch the ducks swim by
and play in the pond.
A large library, a gym,
and studios are also at hand.
Bustling from morning till night
with various interesting characters,
and from all over the world.
You will find ample excitement,
as much as you will find comfort.

From night till morning,
we live our everyday life with the H.
More and more delights are just waiting
to be discovered at our campus.

Everyday life on campus should be
both exciting and comforting.
The “H” (pronounced “Eta”) represents the Houses
that are the students’ daily living base.
At the H Village, which consists of
4 residential buildings and 1 common building,
students can enjoy life 24 hours a day.

About the name of each House

The H Village consists of 5 buildings. The H in H (Eta) Village represents H as in House. An on-campus dormitory housing 300 students. A place where students can meet and gather, and at any time, enjoy communication in which each individuality blends with one another. Days without ups and downs are boring. That is why we need to add a bit of spice to our daily lives. Of course, at the end of the day, we may want to seek herbal remedies to soothe our minds. Lively communication gives us energy for tomorrow. We named each building with the hope that it would be a place that would bring both excitement and comfort. The four residential buildings will be named: Paprika House, Turmeric House, Rosemary House, and Basil House. The common building which caters to all personalities is the Salt House. Let's grow spices and herbs in a central plaza that can be surrounded by all. Before you know it, the House will have turned into your home.

Communal living of
5 students in one unit

Build lifelong friendships with fellow students
who’ve come together from
both Japan and abroad
5 people per unit

The greatest attraction of the H Village is living together with fellow SFC students from within and outside of Japan who are full of individuality. Five residents live in one unit, intellectually stimulating each other and putting “living while learning, and learning while living” into practice. You’re sure to make rich memories and lifelong friends that you will never forget, even long after graduation.
*Units are single-sex only

Private space is
important

You can keep your privacy and
have valuable alone time
UNIT SPACE

Dormitory life and communal living in a unit sounds interesting, but you probably have some concerns, right? Don’t worry. In addition to the spaces shared by the five residents in the unit, the bedrooms are private, so you can cherish your privacy and spend quiet time by yourself.

Make full 24-hour
use of the campus

H VILLAGE

In the morning, wake up in your room and have breakfast in the cafeteria. If you get up early, go for a jog along the Mobius Ring (a circular road) that encircles the campus, or take a walk while watching the ducks relaxing in the quiet duck pond. No stress of crowded trains or bus lines—even if you’re not a morning person, it’s just a short run over to your first-period class. After lunch with friends in a vibrant atmosphere, you can even go back to your room for a nap during free time between classes, or go work out at the gym. Even if you study in the Media Center until late at night, you can walk back to your dormitory in just a few minutes while looking at the stars. Enjoy the rich natural areas of SFC’s campus like they’re your own backyard.

What you can learn through an
international dormitory life

Interact with your diverse peers and
become someone
who can be active
around the world
international dormitory life

Dormitory life will be managed not only by the management company and the university, but also by the leadership of students, including Resident Assistants (RAs), unit leaders, and house leaders. This may be the ideal place to develop the ability to discover and solve problems that SFC values, in addition to the ability to take initiative and build consensus. You will acquire language and communication skills through direct contact with a variety of languages, cultures, and values, using languages such as Japanese and English that you may have in common, with friends from all over the world and throughout Japan. Above all, through communal living, you will be able to gain many important qualities from your experiences, such as compassion for others and responsibility as a student, as well as cooperation and trust from your peers, basic skills that will be essential to succeed in a global society.

Shared spaces for
communal living

Living and learning are so much more fun
when you’re together with everyone!
communal living

There are various common spaces in the dormitory that residents can use. These include a cafeteria where you can gather with friends, a learning commons, and a shared kitchen. Even if you’re living far away from your family and hometown friends, you won’t be alone.

Supporting Healthy Eating

A fulfilling student life
always starts with a well-balanced meal

Breakfast and dinner will be provided for dormitory students Monday through Sunday (except during year-end and new-year's holidays and August summer holidays (Obon).)
The H Village supports students' diet and health with healthy wholesome meals. We aim to create a cafeteria that can be enjoyed every day with a richly varied selection of menu items. In addition, food events such as local fairs and world's fairs will be held regularly, creating a space where students can naturally interact with their peers through "food".

SFC traditions made
by students

Let's build a new foundation at SFC together
with all dormitory students!
all dormitory students

SFC opened in 1990. Many of you may have heard various anecdotes about the frontier spirit of the first-term and early SFC students. As a member of the first cohort of students of the newly-opened H Village, we hope that you will join us in creating the foundations for a new SFC. Through a system of unit leaders, house leaders, and Resident Assistants (RAs), we aim to manage the dormitory with student input in a way that is unique to SFC.

STORY

  • new yet old

The Η Village is a gathering space: to eat, to sleep, to learn, and to talk freely with peers under a single roof. A lifestyle which revolves around books and learning. In fact, however, this style of living is nothing new. If you read Fukuo Jiden (The Autobiography of Yukichi Fukuzawa), you can still get a feel for the “school spirit” of that time emanating from the text. It seems that 160 years ago, the students studied hard. A willingness to learn whenever and wherever you find yourself. Immersion in intellectual pursuits will make your time fly. That is why it is important to close the distance between learning and living.
The Η Village is located within the Shonan Fujisawa Campus. There are a number of student dormitories at Keio University (https://www.keio.ac.jp/ja/student-life/housing.html), but only one is located within its campus. A look backwards at the history of Keio University, reveals that the dormitories were once located on campus. Mita-hyoron (official monthly journal published by Keio University Press), has an account of a dormitory on the hill of Mita that housed 400 students. Apparently not only students but also faculty and staff lived together and congregated around the same dining tables. “Learning” was indeed central to the daily lives of the students. Perhaps this could be said to embody the spirit of “jitsugaku (practical learning).” This important tradition is reflected in the title of the article in which this account is found, “Keio University's dormitories are Keio itself.” *1

  • Eventually, for various reasons, the dormitories were separated from the campus. The hours of our days are now so finely separated that it has become our habit to think of our lives and our studies as occupying different realms. Times have changed, and our lifestyles have also changed dramatically. In the past few years in particular, the freedom to go out and meet with others has been curtailed, and there have been many opportunities to rethink the nature of our campus. This is precisely the moment that the dormitories returned once again to campus. We will continue to be flexible in welcoming change, while at the same time carrying on the Keio traditions and creating a new “school spirit” from here onward. The Η Village is new yet old.
